Privacy Policy

Pinch is a nutrition app. You photograph or describe what you ate, and it estimates the nutrition and scores the day. This page explains what that involves for your data.

1. What we collect, and why

• Account. Your email address and display name, from Sign in with Apple or Google. Used to identify your account and sync it across devices.
• What you log. Meals, drinks, water, weight and workouts, with their estimated nutrition. Stored on your device and synced to your account so it survives a lost phone.
• Photos of food. Taken only when you choose to. Sent to our server for analysis, and, if you post the meal publicly, stored so other people can see it.
• Profile details you enter. Height, weight, activity level, eating style and goals, used to set targets and score your days.
• Pregnancy status, if you set it. Treated as sensitive. See section 4.
• Health app data, if you allow it. Steps and active energy from Apple Health or Health Connect, used for daily energy balance. Authorisation is handled by your device and can be withdrawn there.
• Home city and state, if you enter them. Typed by hand, never read from the device. Shown on your profile unless you turn that off, and counted toward a map that reports states rather than people.
• Subscription status. Whether you have an active subscription, and when it renews or lapses.

We do not collect your device contacts, the location of your device, or your browsing activity. Pinch never asks for location permission and never reads your position.

2. The mailing list

If you give us your email on this website, we store it so we can tell you when Pinch launches, send the occasional letter, and pick people for early access. We also record which phone you use, because it decides which store link your launch email carries.

Alongside it we keep a one-way hash of your IP address, not the address itself. It exists so we can spot one machine signing up fifty people, and it cannot be turned back into a location or a person.

Nothing else. We do not sell or share the list, and every email we send carries an unsubscribe link that removes you from it.

3. Who else processes it

We use a small number of providers, each for one job:

• Google Firebase and Google Cloud: sign-in, database, file storage and the server the app talks to.
• Google Gemini: the model that reads your meal photo or description and returns the nutrition estimate. Your photo and text are sent to it for that purpose.
• RevenueCat: subscription status. It receives a pseudonymous account identifier and your purchase history, not your food or health data.
• Apple and Google: payment for subscriptions. We never see your card details.

We do not sell, rent or trade your data, and we do not use it for advertising.

4. What other people can see

Pinch has a public feed. This is the part most worth understanding:

• A meal you post to Global is public. That means its photo, its name, its nutrition and its score, alongside your display name, username and profile picture.
• A meal you mark private is never published, and is not included when you share a day as an image.
• Water, weight and workouts are never published.
• Reactions and comments you leave are visible to anyone who can see that post.
• Deleting a post removes it from the feed. Copies already downloaded by other people are beyond our reach.

5. Pregnancy status

If you tell Pinch you are pregnant, that fact is used to adjust the guidance you see and is never shown to anyone else. It is removed from anything published to the feed, both when the post is written and again when it is served. We would rather over-engineer this than leak it once.

6. Keeping it

Your data is kept while your account exists. Transport is encrypted (TLS). Access rules are enforced server-side so that only your authenticated account can read or write your records.

7. Your choices

• Edit or delete any individual log from the app.
• Make a post private, or delete it, at any time.
• Export everything you have logged as a file, from Settings.
• Withdraw camera or health permissions in your device settings.
• Delete your account and everything in it, from the app or by emailing us.

8. Children

Pinch is not intended for anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. Nutrition targets and diet-quality scoring are designed for adults.

9. Not medical advice

Pinch estimates nutrition and scores diet quality. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose or treat anything, and it is not a substitute for advice from a doctor or a dietitian.

10. Changes

If this policy changes we will update this page and the date at the top.
